Turner Triumphs On Return

Darryl Turner beat Gareth Holmes in the latest Barratts Handicap. It was Turner's first Barratts event for 12 months and he played well throughout the day before winning the final against Holmes 2-1.

Darryl Turner started the day with an easy win over Jake Spiezick, who had earlier beaten former main tour professional Kyren Wilson. Turner then survived a real scare as he just about overcame youngster Ryan Roberts 2-1 on the final black. In the semi final Turner played his friend Harvey Chandler. However Chandler never got going and Turner breezed into the final 2-0.

Gareth Holmes also had to play some good snooker to reach the final as two of his matches went to the wire. Club favourite Biagio Sereno stretched him in the opening round before Holmes went through 2-1. Holmes then won his quarter final against Kyle Thomas 2-0 before playing the defending champion, Harry Farrell in the semi finals. It looked like Farrell was going to reach the final but Holmes cleared up the colours in the decider to  pinch it.

The final was close all the way. Holmes took the opener and actually had a good chance to take the title in the second frame but he just lost position playing from brown to blue  and Turner potted a pressure black to take it to a decider. In the final frame both players missed easy balls but eventually Turner pulled away to win on the colours.

The plate also produced some good snooker with the match of the day between Brett Gant and Kevin Portley. Gant produced a great 75 in the opener before Portley replied with a break of 55. In the decided a tight game was decider when Portley potted the final pink.

Its a shame Portley cant seem to play as well in the main draw as the plate as  it is probably now 6 months since he won a main draw match. Ronnie Kralj also lost in the opening round for the third tournament in a row as he was surprisingly beaten by Taylor Wilson. The plate was deservedly won by Harry Tiller  who knocked out Joe Dilley, Kyren Wilson and then Biagio Sereno to take the money. Special mention must go out to Joe Dilley who equalled his highest break of 32 despite this being his first Barratts Tournament.
